PERU

Water Catchment, Filtration and Storage for Puerto Sol, Peru

The people of Puerto Sol live isolated on the banks of the Ucayali River, which provides an endless flow of water past their homes. This natural force of nature is also their source of drinking water for the majority of the year, but it's unsafe for consumption.

The EWB-USA San Diego Professional Chapter has partnered with the community to help address the need for safe, reliable, accessible water by developing a rainwater harvesting system.

About the Project

Project Start Date: September 2018

The EWB-San Diego Professional Chapter of EWB-USA applied for a community partnership with Puerto Sol in 2017. We officially adopted the program in May 2018, and started our first project to bring clean water to Puerto Sol in September 2018.

Project Status: Implementation Phase

The purpose of the implementation phase is to present the draft and final design of the project and the details of the proposed implementation in sufficient detail. After the Alternatives Analysis, the team will be preparing draft Design and Construction documentation for review by EWB-USA.

Assessment Phase Complete

The Assessment Phase is designed to establish connections with our community partners, gather data needed for alternatives analysis and design, and to assess the baseline conditions for our required Planning, Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (PMEL) documentation.

The Peru Team returned from our first trip to the community on July 7, and our Post-Trip report is complete! It's on to the Implementation Phase, starting with our Alternatives Analysis.

Surveys and Mapping

Today was a busy day for the EWB team in Puerto Sol. The community map was completed and 8 additional community surveys were finished. The team took soil samples to analyze and was able to visit San Jose to check out the EWB Sonoma County Professional Chapter's successful project. Tomorrow the team will have a meeting with the whole Puerto Sol community, perform some water quality testing, and finish up the community surveys. Only a couple more days left to get to know all we can about Puerto Sol on this trip, and enjoy the amazing food!

Getting to know Puerto Sol

Yesterday our EWB San Diego team met with community leaders, began interviewing community members, and started mapping the community. Today, the team was able to complete interviews with 15 households and add 33 of about 55 buildings to our community map. Tomorrow's schedule includes continuing surveys, mapping, and taking some soil samples!
